Black head is a sex-linked recessive trait.
When the male has on one of the two chromosomes a blackhead factor is head color is not black but he is a carrier (split). When he has the blackhead factor on both chromosomes, he will have a black head. The female will have a black head when she has one black headed factor on a chromosome. The female can never be split for black head.
Several body colors affect the head color. The yellow-gene suppresses the black color. When the body color is yellow, the black head color will be ash-gray to white.
The formulas for black head used in this calculator are:
- Black head male (red beak): Zr/Zr y+/y+
- Black head female (red beak): Zr/W y+/y+
- Black head genetically yellow head male (yellow beak): Zr/Zr y/y
- Black head genetically yellow head female (yellow beak): Zr/W y/y
- Black head split yellow head male (yellow beak): Zr/Zr y+/y
- Black head split yellow head female (yellow beak): Zr/W y+/y
